Arvind Swamy (Tamil: அரவிந்த் சாமி, born 18 June 1966) is a former Indian film actor. He has acted in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi. Popular movies to his credit include Roja, Bombay, Minsaara Kanavu, Indira, Devaraagam, Alaipayuthey.

Early life

Arvind Swamy was born in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu to television actor Delhi Kumar.[1] At an early age, he was adopted by his uncle, industrialist V. D. Swami.[2][1] Arvind Swamy studied in Sishya School and later in Don Bosco and completed his schooling in 1987. He then graduated from Loyola College,Chennai in 1990 in business. He went to the United States to do his Masters in International Business from Wake Forest University in North Carolina.

Film career

He was introduced to the movie industry by Mani Ratnam through his Thalapathi. His first film, as lead hero, was Mani Ratnam's Roja. The movie became a hit throughout the country and Arvind Swamy's impressive performance established his position as an actor. He was very selective about his roles. Though he has acted in only a few films, most of them went on to become blockbusters, highly rated by film critics. Roja and Bombay, both having a national integration theme won many awards at the State and National levels. Arvind has won several awards, popular and critical, for his films. He was also reviewed by Time Magazine and was appreciated by the magazine for his 'soulful' performance in the film Bombay.

Arvind Swamy retired from acting in 2000. In spite of his superstar status, he decided to quit acting and pursue other interests. After a long break, he will be the villain in the upcoming Vishal-Trisha film directed by Thiru. The actor, who kept on refusing offers from the directors, was reportedly impressed with Thiru's script.[3]

Personal life

He went to pursue his Masters in Business Administration at Wake Forest University, North Carolina, USA, but unfortunately he returned shortly to India due to his mother's ill health. He lost his mother in 1993,but his father is still alive .

Arvind Swamy got married to Gayathri Ramamurthy in 1994 and they had a daughter, Adhira (b.1996) and a son Rudra (b.2000). However, the couple had a strained relationship and lived separately for 7 years until 2010, when they filed for divorce.[4] Arvind Swamy continues to live with his children.[5]
